Lasix
What is it?
 Diuretic- Lasix, Furosemide, Myrosemide
 Used For- Edema (Fluid Retention); 20 to 80 mg./day
o Diseases- Congestive Heart Failure, Cirrhosis, Renal Disease
o IV/Intravenous- Acute Pulmonary Edema; 40 mg. IV over 1-2
minutes; -Oral/By Mouth- Hypertension
Side Effects
 Central Nervous System/CNS- Vertigo, Dizziness, Headache,
Weakness, Drowniness, Blurred Vision, Fatigue, Irreversible
Hearing Loss
 Gastrointestinal/GI- Anorexia, Nausea, Vomiting, Gastric and
Oral Irritation, Diarrhea, Constipation, Jaundice, Pancreatitis
 Blood- Anemia, Fluid and Electrolyte Imbalance, High Blood
Sugar, High Uric Acid Levels in the Blood
 Other- Volume Depletion, Increased Urination, Urinary Bladder
Spasm, Muscle Cramps/Spasms, Decreased GI absorption with
Charcoal, may reduce effect of Insulin
What can I do?
 See your Health Care Provider or Pharmacist- as needed
 AVOID- Alcohol; using with Premature Infants may complicate
respiratory distress syndrome
 See FoodFitnessFirst Registered Dietitian- on line for help; administer
with Food or Milk to prevent GI Upset, give early in the day not to disturb
Sleep with going to the bathroom; Eat Potassium Rich Foods as Orange
Juice, Oranges, Bananas, Broccoli, Almonds, Cashews, Dried Apricots,
Frozen Lima Beans, Bitter Chocolate, Sardines in Oil
