What is it
- Mammogram- a breast X-Ray that can detect breast tumors too small to be detected by clinical breast exam or breast self-exam, mammogram saves lives
- Mammogram- uses low level X-Rays to detect breast cancer early or abnormal levels in the breast
Facts
- Yearly Mammogram- reduce breast cancer by 1/3 for women > 50
- Preparation for a Mammogram- 1 to 2 weeks after your period, wear comfortable clothing ease to remove from the waist up
- AVOID- lotions, deodorants, powder, perfumes
- False-Positive Results- may indicate cancer when there is none, follow-up tests are needed for confirmation
- ACS (American Cancer Society)- recommends first mammogram at age 40

- 1 Facility- should have all your records on file
- Mammogram- 35 to 40 need a initial baseline exam
- 40-49- every 1 to 2 years
- 50- yearly
- Breast Cancer- Physician performs a biopsy, a small piece of the lump is removed, examined under a microscope
- Ultrasound Scanning- to distinguish between a solid lump and a fluid filled sac (cyst)
- Solid Lump- usually requires a biopsy
