Food Sensitivity
What is it?
- Adverse reaction- to a particular food, hypersensitivity any immunologically mediated reaction to food and their additives
- Reaction- most occur within minutes of ingestion of a particular food
Signs and Symptoms
- Skin- rashes, hives, itching, eczema, flushed skin
- Circulatory- irregular heartbeat, hypotension
- Respiratory- asthma, chronic coughing, sneezing, nasal congestion, seasonal allergic rhinitis, recurrent otitis, eustachian tube dysfunction, laryngeal edema, difficulty breathing
- Musculoskeletal- myalgia, arthralgia, arthritis
- Gastrointestinal- gas, constipation, cramping, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Neuropsychiatric- anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, fatigue, headaches, irritability, hyperactivity
Foods to Eliminate
- Food Sensitive- peanuts, fish, shellfish, nuts, peanuts, eggs, milk, soy, wheat
- Beverages eliminated- milk, carbonated beverages, tea, coffee, alcohol
- Meats or Substitutes- eggs, cheese, fish, shellfish, legumes
- Vegetables- all canned, any beans
- Miscellaneous- pepper, spices, herbs, chewing gum, aspartame, saccharin, ketchup, mustard, yeast, chocolate, popcorn
- processed foods with terms as added- nitrites, flavor, color, sulfite
- food antioxidants- BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), MSG (monosodium glutamate)
