What is it?
*A serious condition also called Neonatal Hepatitis
*Evident 2-6 weeks after birth
Signs and Symptoms:
*Complete degeneration- of 1 or more bile ducts
-can be incomplete development
-due to arrested fetal development
-jaundice, liver damage
-portal hypertension with pale stools, dark urine, swollen abdomen
Diagnosis:
*Unknown etiology
What can I do?
*Liver transplant if donor is available
*Drugs for organ rejection
*Your Physician will
-correct malabsorption, alleviate steatorrhea from decreased bile
-prevent hemorrhage from high blood pressure
-correct malabsorption of fat soluble vitamins
-promote normal growth and development
*Use a Low Fat Diet

-supplement with medium chain triglyceride oils, add essential fatty acids for age, size
*Control intake of protein
*Edema- add Low Sodium Diet (1-2 Grams)
*Decrease fiber- to prevent hemorrhage from the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract)
*Small, frequent feedings
