What is it?
*An injury- during the birth of the baby
Facts:
*Mother’s pelvic bones make up the birth canal
*Diabetic mothers- have larger babies, smaller canals
-birth often results in injury, can be difficult
-C-section reduces chance of injury
*Most injuries are minor, heal quickly
*Bones of fetus skull- not joined together
-head can be molded as needed and returns to normal within a few days
*Nerves- can be damaged due to stretching
-especially nerves to the arms
-temporary or permanent weakness in the arms (Erb palsy)
*Fractures to the collar bone occur occasionally
-heal without complications
What can I do?
*See your Physician
*Talk with RD about diet if mother is Diabetic
-monitoring blood sugar/glucose
*See a FFF RD on line for help as needed
