What is it?
*Facial abnormality
-Cleft Lip- incomplete joining of the upper lip, just below the nose
-disfiguring, cannot close lips to hold a nipple
-1 in 1,000
-Cleft Palate- abnormal passageway through the roof of the mouth into the nostril
-problems with speech, eating
-1 in 1,800
Signs and Symptoms:
*Usually occur together cleft lip and palate
-affects 1 in every 650 births
Another facial defect:
*Pierre Robin syndrome/Treacher Collins’ syndrome-
-small lower jaw (mandible)
-difficulty eating
What can I do?
*Permanently corrected with surgery
*Talk with your Physician
