Colic
What is it?
*Disorder- when child has abdominal pain
*Crying and irritability episodes
*Colic- named for the colon (large intestine)
-too much gas in the intestines
*Cause is unknown
-may begin when child gets home from hospital or weeks later
-may occur sporadically during the first 3 to 5 months
Facts:
*Excessive crying- child swallows air creates gas (flatulence), abdominal swelling
-child eats, gains weight well
-very hungry, sucks well
*Usually clears up- after 3 months of age
Goals:
*25 minutes for a feeding/meal
-if less then need smaller holes in nipple
What can I do?
*See your Physician
*See RD for help with meal planning- formulas, amounts, times
*See FFF RD on line for help as needed
*Rock and hold gently
*Try a pacifier
