Information about Formulas:
*Designed to resemble breast milk
*Nutritional adequate for normal development of brain
*Cuddle child to form a bond
*Bottle fed heavier than breast fed usually, this can lead to obesity
What should I do?
*Mix formulas according to directions
*First few months sterilize formulas, nipples, bottles
*Follow a schedule, otherwise can lead to overeating
*Breast milk and formula for 1 year
*Add solid food only if at 4 months >12 pounds or drinking > 1 Quart/day formula
DO NOT:
*Add cereals to formula
*Add solids to formula
*Feed each time child cries, try water first
*Add sugar to the water
*Cow’s milk -leads to GI (gastrointestinal) bleeding, anemia, increases renal load
(higher sodium, protein content), use after 2 years
THIS LEADS TO OBESITY, FEEDING PROBLEMS
What do I need to do?
*See your Physician, ask about Fe (iron) supplementation
-Fe given if low birth rate, premature
*Talk with a Registered Dietitian for Meal Planning
