What is it?
*Red Blood Cells have an abnormal membrane- results in hemolysis
Signs and Symptoms:
*Anemia, edema (fluid retention), puffy eyelids, noisy breathing,
encephalomalacia in infancy
Medications:
*Vitamin E (Water Soluble/x-tocopherol)- usually given, do not take with
Fe supplement interferes with utilization
Facts:
*Often occurs in infants receiving PUFA’s (Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids) with
inadequate Vitamin E
What can I do?
*See your Physician
-correct Vitamin E deficiency, anemia
-decrease PUFA’s- depletes Vitamin E, avoid excessive Iron (Fe), adequate Zinc
