What is it?
*Red Blood Cells have an abnormal membrane- results in
hemolysis
Signs and Symptoms:
*Anemia, Edema (Fluid Retention), Puffy Eyelids,
Noisy Breathing, Encephalomalacia in Infancy
Medications/Facts:
*Vitamin E (Water Soluble/x-tocopherol)- usually given, do not
take with Fe supplement interferes with utilization
*Often Occurs in Infants- receiving PUFA’s
(Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids) with inadequate Vitamin E
What can I do?
*See your Physician- correct Vitamin E deficiency, anemia
-decrease PUFA’s- depletes Vitamin E, avoid excessive Iron (Fe),
adequate Zinc

*Diet- for sex, age, activity
