Hypothermia
What is it?
*Hypothermia- Body Temperature drops below normal
*Body- loses heat faster than heat can be produced by metabolism,
shivering and muscle contractions
When can it happen?
*Temperatures- 45 degrees F or higher with wet and wind
*Inactive, frail people- can develop indoors if not dressed warm
*Hikers or skiers- can start to shiver violently, stumble or respond
incoherently seek help immediately
What are the Symptoms?
*Impaired judgement, Shivering, Cold, Pale Skin, Confusion,
Clumsy Movement, Slurred Speech, Cold Stomach, Slow pulse,
Slow Breathing, Weakness, Drowsiness
What do I need to do?
*See a Physician immediately-
-can result in death if heat loss continues
*Dress- warmly and wear waterproof clothing-wool
*Warm- hat, gloves, socks, waterproof shoes
*Eat- Correctly, Carry Extra Food and Beverages
*AVOID- beverages containing alcohol, body loses heat faster
