Facts:
*Promotes optimal growth, development, physiological, nutritional needs
-First 4-5 months - birth weight doubles
-1 year - birth weight triples
*Breast Feeding is preferred- optimal nutrition, development, closer bond,
simpler, cost effective
-colostrum is secreted from mother’s breast providing antibodies to fight infection
during first postpartum week, also colostrum changes to meet neonate needs
-lower in fat, calories, Vitamin C, B Vitamins
-higher in Vitamin A, E, sodium, potassium, carotene, protein, phospholipids
First 6 months:
*Neonate/infant- breast milk or comparable formula
*Vitamin C and D monitored
After 6 months:
*Additional Fe (Iron) is required
*Breast milk or iron-fortified formula through 1st year
*Add solid foods slowly and if not tolerated leave off and try at a later date
