What should I do?
*When add solid foods, add single-grain fortified baby cereal (has Iron (Fe))
-1-2 Tablespoons/day, dilute with formula or breast milk
-thin consistency, infant-sized spoon
-after tolerate 1 food add another food as- cereals, vegetables, fruits, meats, egg yolk
-add egg whites at first of second year due to allergic reactions
*Desserts - fruits, custards
*Individual strained baby foods, avoid combination foods (casseroles)
*If food refused, try another food, semi-solid foods - small amounts given
*Add junior, chopped foods, finger foods when child makes chewing motions
*Let children use their fingers and hands to eat, keep clean -
celery, carrots > 2 years
*Use small cups, utensils, spoons - easier to manipulate until motor skills developed
*Serve small portions and give second portions as requested
Do Not:
*Add sugar, salt
*Hard foods - raw celery, carrots, broccoli, add after 2 years of age
-chewing ability should be well developed
*Use food as a reward for discipline
*Never force a child to eat
*Do not make a child eat all that is on their plate
