Juvenile Diabetes Level 3

Type I Diabetes
What is it?
*Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus- usually occurs in children
*Changes in Meal Plan and Insulinwill Begin as the Child Grows, Sexually Matures
What increases chances of having Type I Diabetes?
*Family History of Diabetes, Overweight/Obesity
What can I do for my child?
*Meals and Snacks- on Time, making sure Family, School and
Friends are Aware
*When Child is Not Hungry- ask to eat Small Amounts
over a Couple of Hours
*Drink Liquids- if can’t Eat Solid Foods use 1/3 cup Apple Juice
*Encourage Good Snacks- Cheesy Popcorn, Graham
Crackers with Peanut Butter, Fresh Fruit with Sugar Free Pudding
*Always- let Him know you Love Him, he is not being
Punished, always Support Him
*DO NOT DELAYA MEAL > 45 minutes
*Hungry Child after a Meal- Encourage extra feedings of a Free
Food or some Meat or Eggs
*If Child is Hungry > 3 Days- See Physician or a RD
What should I do:
*See your Physician- Discuss Diet, Insulin, Testing, Exercise
*See a Registered Dietitian- for Diabetic Diet Instructions
