(Lymphadenopathy)
What is it?
*Lymph Nodes- small glands throughout the body, neck lymph nodes are noticeable,
remain hard and visible after the infection is gone especially in children; most
likely in neck, armpits or groin
-Swell- as body fights infection as small cuts, insect bites, colds, sore throat,
stress, larger with a serious infection
-Groin- swells with a vaginal or pelvic infection, sore or cut on leg or foot
Signs and Symptoms:
*Lymph Nodes- get bigger, more tender when fighting infection; hard and firm,
may seem misshaped, skin near lymph node warm to touch
Medications:
*Infection- antibiotic, antiviral medication
*Acetaminophen- for fever, pain
Facts:
*Children- more likely to have than adults, in children usually a sign of infection
*Cause- viral or bacteria infection, allergic reactions, arthritis, cancer, overactive
thyroid/hyperthyroidism or metabolic diseases
*Lymph Nodes- < 1/2 inch across when at normal size, can swell 2 to 3 times normal
-Return to Normal- 2-3 weeks, when infection is gone
What can I do?
*See your Physician- if swollen for > 2 weeks; may take a swollen lymph node
biopsy

*Suggestions- gargle with salt water or mouthwash, rest, drink plenty of fluids,
eat healthy foods
*AVOID- squeezing the lymph node, taking aspirin
