What is it?
*Collagen disorder of unknown etiology- involves areas of erythema of the skin
Signs and Symptoms:
*Butterfly rash on cheeks, pyrexia, toxemia, malaise, hepatosplenomegaly, diarrhea,
weight loss, pleurisy, renal damage, pericarditis
Medications:
*NSAIDs- may need a Low Sodium Diet due to sodium retention
*Plaquenil- monitor for nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, anorexia
*Steroid Therapy- may cause negative nitrogen balance, hyperglycemia,
sodium retention, calcium/potassium depletion
*Sunscreens- to protect against harmful rays of the sun
Facts:
*Most affected- women of child bearing age
*Close population- family members have a 10 to 12 times higher rate than general
population, genetic origin, no cure is known
What can I do?
*See your Physician- reduce fever, replenish potassium, nutrient losses,
prevent weight loss, manage renal failure, disease manifestations

*Adjust as needed- Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Fluids, High Calorie/Proteinfor Nitrogen losses due to fever, if Renal problems- RD to adjust diet accordingly
*Adequate Rest, AVOID Fatigue, Stress
*Monitor Glucose Levels- manage with diet
*Use Sunblock when outside
