What is it?
*Removal of the tonsils and adenoids, less common
Facts:
*Tissues part of protective immune system
*Removal is last resort- especially for children with chronic throat, ear, sinus
infection
What can I do?
*See your Physician
-Supplements- Vitamin C, if juices not tolerated
-Zinc- evaluate and add if needed
-Adequate Fluids- 3 Liters for Adults, 2 Liters for Children

*Preoperative- Adequate Calories, Protein, Glycogen stores, Fluids
*Postoperative- Cold Liquids- Gingerale, Sherbet, Nectar, Gelatin, Popsicles
-Avoid milk and dairy products- give only as tolerated
-to prevent discomfort
-progress diet as tolerated- nonirritating foods
-prevent/correct nausea and vomiting
-Second or Third Day- progress to soft Scrambled Eggs, Puddings, Strained
Cereals, Cream Soups, foods as tolerated without discomfort
*Soft diet for about a week or add foods back to the diet as tolerated,
continue if no discomfort, leave off if discomfort and add at a later date
*Avoid- Hot, Spicy as Hot Peppers, Fried Chicken, French Fries, raw fruits and
vegetables, citrus juices, chili, etc...
*Large swallows of water can cause less pain than small swallows
-AVOID STRAWS
-Cool Liquids until pain subsides
*AVOID: RED GELATIN to distinguish from hemorrhage
