Infant Feeding Guidelines
(Birth to 6 Months)
How much breast milk or formula is needed/Calories?
*0-2 weeks -2-3 oz. per feeding/total for day - 20 oz. (6-8 feedings) = 450-500
*2 weeks-2 months - 3-5 oz. per feeding/total for day - 28 oz. (5-6 feedings)=480-600
*2 1/2 months - 5 oz. per feeding/total for day - 30 oz. (5-6 feedings)=600
*3 months - 6- 6 1/2 oz. per feeding/total for day - 32-34 oz. (5-6 feedings)=650-680
*4-6 months - 7-8 oz. per feeding/total for day - 28-32 oz. (4-5 feedings)750-860
Food Additions:
*Apple Juice - 3-4 oz.- 6 month
*Enriched Baby Cereals - 3T. - 6 months- Breakfast and Dinner
*Strained Fruits - 1 1/2 - 2 Tablespoons - Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
*Strained Vegetables - 2-3 T. - Lunch
*Strained Meats - 1-2 T. - Lunch
*Egg Yolk - 1/2 or 1 T.
*Teething Biscuit - 1 per day
Oral/Neuromuscular Development:
*0-2 months - sucking, rooting, swallowing
*3 months - extrusion reflex diminishes, voluntary sucking
*4-5 months - put hands to mouth, develops grasp
*5-6 months - chewing, lips to rim of cup
