Calories
To calculate the caloric needsfor a child use the following calculation:
Weightin kilograms X caloriesforthe child's age listed below:
Premature Infants 120 Kcal/kg/d
Infants 0‐6months 108 Kcal/kg/d
6‐12months 98 Kcal/kg/d
Children 1‐3 years 102 Kcal/kg/d
4‐6 years 90 Kcal/kg/d
7‐10 years 70 Kcal/kg/d
For example: A 2 year old child who weighs 29 pounds will need:
29 pounds divided by 2.2 = 13.18 kilograms
13.18 kilograms X 102 Kcals/kg/d = 1344 calories a day
Protein
To calculate the protein needsfor a child use the following calculation:
Weightin kilograms X grams of protein/kg/d listed forthe child's age listed below:
Premature Infants 2.2 gms protein/kg/d
Infants 0‐6months 2.2 gms protein/kg/d
6‐12months 1.6 gms protein/kg/d
Children 1‐3 years 1.2 gms protein/kg/d
4‐6 years 1.1 gms protein/kg/d
7‐10 years 1.0 gmprotein/kg/d
For example: A 2 year old child who weighs 29 pounds will need:
29 pounds divided by 2.2 = 13.18 kilograms
13.18 kilograms X 1.2 gms protein/kg/d = 15.8 or 16 grams protein a day
Fluid
To calculate fluid requirementsfor a child use the following calculation:
For 1‐10 kg 100ml/kg/d
For 11‐20 kg 1000ml plus 50ml/kg for each kg over 10kg
Above 20 kg 1500ml plus 20ml/kg for each kg over 20 kg
For example: A 2 year old child who weighs 29 pounds will need:
29 pounds divided by 2.2 = 13.18 kilograms
13.18 kg – 10 kgs = 3.18 kgs over 10 kgs
1000mlforthe first 10 kg + (3.18 kg X 50ml/kg) = fluid requirements
1000ml + 159ml = 1159ml/d
