What is it?
Osteoporosis- is a disease that causes the bones to become so weak that
they break during normal activities
Signs and Symptoms:
Osteoporosis- usually develops over many years without symptoms
First Signs- Loss of Height, Developing a Curved Upper Back (Dowager’s
Hump), back pain or broken bones
Risk Factors:
Family History, Lack of Weight Bearing Exercises, Slender Body Frame, Asian
or European Heritage, Women who Smoke or Drink, Elevated Thyroid
Hormone (Hyperthyroidism)
Limit Alcohol- < 1 Drink per Day
Caffeine- Increases Calcium Loss from the Body
Menopause- Estrogen Therapy helps prevent Osteoporosis

Weakening Bones- natural part of growing older
Start Healthy Habits Early in Life- do weight bearing exercises that help
keep the bones strong, Eat a Healthy Diet with Vitamin D and Calcium
o Weight Bearing Exercises- walking, jogging, climbing stairs, dancing,
weight lifting
Osteoporosis- affects 20 million older Americans, women are four times
more likely to develop in women than men, is more common after
menopause
Foods High in Vitamin D/Calcium- Milk, Dairy Products, Tofu, Fortified Soy
Milk, Broccoli, Certain Greens, Calcium Fortified Orange Juice, Tums
