What is it?

  • BAD HABIT- decreases your health and your family’s health, wastes money, causes wrinkles

Signs and Symptoms

  • Mouth, Throat, Larynx, Tongue Cancer

Facts

  • Cigars, Smokeless Tobacco, Snuff, Pipe- contain nitrosamines which cause cancer, chewed, inhaled or held in cheek
  • Nicotine- Raises blood pressure, heart rate
  • Mouth (can develop into cancer)- thick, wrinkled, white patches (leukoplakia)
  • Asthma- less severe attacks, less severe
  • Risk of Heart Attack- cut into half the first year after smoking
  • Five Years- about the same risk as never smoking
  • Lung damage- irreversible, prevents more lung damage when quitting
  • decreases- cough, SOB (Shortness of Breath), damage to mouth, tongue, lips, throat
  • Sexual- fewer problems maintaining erections

What can I do?

  • See your Physician- ask about nicotine patches (gum, nasal spray, patches, inhalers)
  • See RD for help as needed
  • See FFF RD on line for help
  • Quit Smoking- to improve your health, causes cancer, heart disease, stroke
  • Children- have more ear infections, asthma, bronchitis, breathing problems, and are more likely to smoke if their parents smoke
  • Exercise, use low calorie snacks, gums, use relaxation methods, set goals and stick with your goals, get help as needed
  • AVOID- Alcohol and Smoking -decreases- accidents, problems in your life and those you love
